The colors and pattern on this plate are stunning!

This spectacular slip-decorated redware charger was hand painted and artist signed with initials S. J. Made by potter Samuel Johansson from Arvika, Värmland.

Some history found via the internet: (Translated) The old the pottery of the Upper Great cottage in Arvika was founded around 1870 by Johan Johansson. He was born in Stavsnäs January 28, 1848 and devoted himself primarily to making pottery flower pots. The potters also worked sons Charles, born on New Year's Eve 1881, Samuel was born December 6, 1898.

Samuel began his career as a turner at Riborg Böving. There he was, inter alia, learn to decorate pottery, something he seriously practiced in his father's workshop. Samuel also had plans to go to America, but when his mother became ill and bedridden, he chose to stay home. Samuel stood for innovative thinking and it was also he who created all the designs and decorations on pottery objects.

Samuel dies at Upper Big croft March 10, 1992. The articles were signed "SJ" alt. "SJ Arvika"

Beautiful and rare display for the collector. Wonderful condition. 11.5" in diameter.
